MidNJ: "Back in the 1970's and 80's no one could agree on the "theory" that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and heart disease. "
That's not true. Back in the 1960s it was an easy good grade on a jr high science project to build a device to puff cigarettes into cotton ball filters and show all the junk that went into your lungs and therefore caused sickness and cancer. Never mind that none of this proved anything...everyone "knew" it did and the poor science experiment got a good grade because the students and teachers all knew it was true.

"meltdown"?
Please, don't make me laugh...
After the failed attempt to paint the entire scientific community with "climate gate" (which failed), the anti-Global Warming crowd now falls-back on one person's claim on glacial melt, versus the thousands of scientists and their per-reviewed scientific studies that all show changes tied to Global Warming.
They are correct on their one major point - the science needs to be beyond reproach - to help prevent fueling the grossly overblown hype that occurs when even one questionable result is published.

The science is "settled". More carbon dioxide leads to warming. This has been around since the late 1800s. If not then you need to explain how the physics of the absorption spectrum is now incorrect for radiation. How this manifests itself on a global scale & how we elect to mitigate the impacts is another matter.

To Gnusman53 --
With the exception of the weather forecast and the date, I would put a great deal more faith and trust in what is printed in the New York Post that I would put in anything printed in the New York Times since Arthur O. Sulzberger, Jr. became publisher in 1992.

Climates have changed over time and will continue to change. The question is how we adapt rather than who's fault it is.

Graceman,
Back in the 1970's and 80's no one could agree on the "theory" that cigarette smoking causes lung cancer and heart disease. Why because the cigarette companies funded their own studies.
You say, "No one can agree on this (global warming debate)".
Perhaps you smoke cigarettes today and still believe the misinformation that the tobacco industry put out 40 years ago. Hopefully not and you are spending your money in better ways.
"Scientists" (or those who proport to be) can put out any and all kinds of mis-information. ----
The question is, do you believe it?

From the article, " ... that man-made carbon emissions pose a threat to the global temperature equilibrium -- and to civilization itself." The article's focus, by and large, shows why THAT claim and other claims like it, don't 'stand up'. 'Man-made' seems to be the operative phrase that is in dispute, NOT that the Climate is changing. There IS a consensus that our planet's climate is changing. And no one is out to "save the planet" ... our planet is going to be just fine. What people ARE out to save, though, is the human race. On the one hand, does it REALLY make a difference what is causing it? One the other hand, is it being suggested that 6 billion people are NOT having an impact on the planet?

The last 4 paragraphs pretty well say it all. The scientific community is ruining its reputation with gross exaggerations of things with no scientific basis.

The InterAcademy Council seems to be its own biggest admirer. Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorps owns both Fox News and the NY Post. Don't expect accuracy, just ideology. The deniers just lost one of their own to acknowledging both global warming, which is easily confirmable by thermometers and rapidly melting ice, and human involvement. See: http://www.readersupportednews.org/off-site-news-section/49-49/3183-noted-anti-global-warming-scientist-reverses-course
Noted Anti-Global Warming Scientist Reverses Course By Brett Michael Dykes, The Upshot/Y!News
"With scientific data piling up showing that the world has reached its hottest-ever point in recorded history, global-warming skeptics are facing a high-profile defection from their ranks. Bjorn Lomborg, author of the influential tract 'The Skeptical Environmentalist,' has reversed course on the urgency of global warming, and is now calling for action on 'a challenge humanity must confront.'"

Here are the headline messages from the December 2009 IAP STATEMENT ON TROPICAL FORESTS AND CLIMATE CHANGE
The full article can be found at: http://www.interacademies.net/Object.File/Master/10/070/Statement_DES1748_IAP%20forests_11.09_P-2-1.pdf
• There can be no solution to climate change without addressing deforestation; • Deforestation must be addressed now, not later, if we are to meet an 80% CO2 reduction target by 2050; • Forests play a critical role in the climate system by providing a natural carbon capture and storage function and by regulating rainfall patterns; sustainable forest management can make a major contribution to climate change mitigation; • Deforestation of tropical forests accounts for around 17% of global carbon dioxide emissions: a failure to address this source of emissions will significantly compromise global efforts to tackle climate change; • Intact and healthy forests provide food, energy, water, shelter and flood protection services, reducing the vulnerability of rural populations to climate change and enabling adaptation to climate impacts; • Funding developing countries to maintain their forests, using already available methodologies, capacity and funds, will offer new opportunities for generating wealth and ending poverty; • Any agreement reached as part of the UNFCCC negotiations must respect the rights of forest dwellers and forest dependent peoples when designing and implementing schemes, and promote sustainable development pathways that do not involve deforestation.

Recent "Global Warming" study proves that scientists and politicians were acting like magicians and pulling rabbits and white pigeons out of their hats. They well played their tricks to entertain and convincing people and made their living by writing books, made speeches etc.
